This page contains images painted “en plein air” (outside in the air!).
These paintings are done much more quickly than a painting done inside in an art studio. Usually an outdoor scene changes rapidly because of the position of the sun and the shadows it casts, because of the weather, or because people come and go! For that reason artists paint what they see very quickly before the scene changes. Sometimes bugs, wind, and cold are a part of the experience. And sometimes a subject just disappears, as when I was painting a busy street scene where people got into their parked automobiles and drove them away. It’s a very refreshing way to paint and can be frustrating – very fun!
