South of Balboa Park in San Diego, near the large water fountain is a footbridge that crosses over Park Boulevard into the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden. This collection of American roses (2,400 bushes in 800 varieties) was honored in 2003 by The World Federation of Rose Societies as one of the Top 12 Public Rose Gardens in the World, one of only two in the U.S. to receive this distinction. It was carefully designed to be a model municipal garden which would stand the test of time, and fluctuating park department budgets. This is a popular wedding spot and is open year-round. It’s especially beautiful April through may, which is when I painted the roses you will see over the coarse of the next couple weeks.
